My Story

Once upon a time, there was a very sad and neglected German Shepherd mix named Sam Hunt, who came from the most unfortunate of circumstances. Sam had spent the majority of his seven years confined to a crate, with minimal time outside. He was severely malnourished and underweight. But one day, that changed.

Sam’s path to his very own happily-ever-after had begun. His first stop was an animal shelter, which was a little scary with all of the other dogs barking all the time. He was there for four weeks before Big Fluffy Dog Rescue could find a foster for him, and that’s when things really made the turn for the better for our sweet Sam.

Sam moved into his new foster home with his amazing foster parents who were patient and kind, and helped to work with him to build his confidence and trust in people. He had the perfect canine companion who is skilled in showing foster dogs the ropes and providing cues on ‘how to dog’. Sam is now finally ready to take it to the next step, and find his family.

Sam is ~ 70 lbs, although he’s still underweight and could stand to put on another 10 lbs. He is shy and timid at first, but once he warms up, he is loyal, loving, and affectionate. Given he can be a little skittish, a home with older children would be best. He is the ultimate companion for anyone looking for a dog to kick back and relax with. He’s lower energy now that he’s in retirement, and he wants to spend his time with his feet up, enjoying all this new world has to offer. He wants to be the center of someone’s world, and he will return this love in spades. He even likes to tuck his foster mom in at night, as he won’t be able to settle in for the evening until he’s rest assured that she has called it a day as well. (swoon)

Given he was so malnourished his entire life, food is an incredibly high valued resource to Sam. He is an expert level counter surfer, and all food needs to be securely locked down and out of sight. If he is adopted in a home with other dogs, he will need to separated from them when either he’s eating, or even if there’s just food out (he is fine with people, the behavior is specific to other dogs). Sam has nearly perfected his house training, although he does still have the occasional accident. He does well on leash but could use continued work to become great.

In his perfect world, Sam would be the only dog so he didn’t have to share any of that amazing human attention. He really wants to be his person’s very best friend. If there was another dog present, he would be best with a dog who is low key, as he would not be a fan of excessively playful, energetic, dominant or in-your-face dogs. He *loves* to be around his people now that he understands that people can be kind and loving, and would be happiest in a home with someone around more often than not.
