My Story

Gidget is a 12 week old Great Pyrenees mix puppy currently topping the scales at 25 pounds. She will get much larger. This is not a life of the party girl and she is on the quiet side. She is beautiful and sweet but you should be aware of what you are getting with this breed.

1. Pyrs heard what you said, and they don’t care. It’s exactly like being married for 20 years.

2. They are untrustworthy off leash. Also, a lot like spouses. I would not trust my husband off leash anywhere near a camera store or trinket shop for a national park.

3. They bark. Sometimes at things, sometimes because it’s fun. It’s always great to decide which it is at 4 am when you are alone in the house.

4. If you ask me if they shed, you cannot adopt Gidget.

5. They are terrible obedience dogs. We bred them for 3000 years to guard sheep independent of humans, and if you imagine that you will defeat this independent streak bred in for 3000 years during your ownership of the dog, you are doomed to disappointment. Sit is a major achievement and only if they want to humor you.

6. They need to be socialized. Some dogs are dorks. Pyrs can be dorks. These puppies are not dorks. They are schemers. Plan accordingly.

7. They are shockingly intelligent. The dumb look is an act. They know what you said and what you want, but today is the day they only speak Mandarin. Check back tomorrow or master a new language.

If you can manage this, you can manage this puppy.
