Captain
My Story
This is Captain, a 5 year old, 85 pound Great Pyrenees. He came in our doors in November of 2021 weighing 55 pounds and with a broken back. After months of forced cage rest and a lot of rehab, this handsome boy is ready for a home.
As with all Great Pyrenees, he is an intelligent, thinking dog who always has a plan. It may not always be your plan, so people who want to adopt a Pyrenees need to understand what you are getting. No teenager has ever successfully evaded a Great Pyrenees when sneaking out. These dogs are built in watchers and they miss nothing. They are untrustworthy off leash, they need a fenced yard, and they can be barky when they think you need to be alerted to something. These dogs were originally bred to guard sheep, and when there are no sheep to guard, they will guard you. Understanding that your dog thinks you’re a dumb sheep with no sense of self-preservation is the key to appreciating the Great Pyrenees. They are loyal to a fault, very sweet and nice, lovely dogs who make fantastic pets.
Captain is no exception. He is a happy, well-adjusted dog who is happy to play with toys and demand petting. He possesses a mean right hook with that paw when he wants your attention and he is not above smacking your hand with his head when you fail to notice his need for petting.
He is good with dogs, but because of the injury he had (break at L7), he is not a candidate to go to homes with dogs that want to bounce and play. He could go to a home with mellow, lazy dogs that can’t be bothered to raise their heads to bark at the Amazon guy. He is not a great fan of cats because one has taunted him for months just outside his crate and she had the temerity to linger just outside his food bowl. He is fine with kids who understand that this dog can never be rough-housed with and that he is to be treated like Mom’s fancy crystal – you can pet him and hold him, but you can’t throw him around.
Captain is well mannered in the home and is a really good boy who deserves a lot better than he got. He will make someone a fantastic companion.
