My Story

Here’s something you don’t see every day. This is Cubby, a 5-month-old, 30-pound Bernese mountain dog/poodle/basset mix. This dog was bred on purpose as he and several others came to us from a puppy mill where they were selling them.

Cubby is a sweet, very timid dog. Given where he started out in life, it’s unsurprising that he is fearful of new things. When in an unfamiliar environment, Cubby will run and hide. Cubby is adorable, but he needs the right home. He needs someone with a securely fenced yard because I would deem him a significant escape risk until he is settled in his home. He also needs someone with another dog to show him how to be a dog and an owner who is patient and not expecting instant devotion. With dogs like Cubby, undying love and devotion is earned.

Cubby is not for a home with a ton of in-and-out activity, and I think screechy kids would scare him senseless. Sullen, teen-aged kids would be fine. He needs a calm home, with a dog friend, a fenced yard, and mellow people. He will come out of his shell, but I would not expect this dog to ever be the life of the party. He is fine with cats and other dogs.
