My Story
This striking fellow is Derk. He has one of the most gorgeous colorings we’ve ever seen. He is a chocolate brown/chestnut/red brindle with beautiful golden eyes. We believe he is a Chocolate Lab mix, possibly with something like Catahoula Leopard Dog. He is approximately 8 months old and currently weighs around 53 pounds.
Derk was an owner surrender and we honestly can’t tell you why because he is just the sweetest boy. He loves other dogs, is always ready to play, and doesn’t take offense if another dog gets growly with him. He is pretty energetic and bouncy, so other dogs in the home should be interested in having a rough and tumble wrestling buddy!
Derk was interested in, but friendly, towards our kennel cats. He followed them around until he could sniff them, and once he realized they had no interest in playing with him, he wandered off to see if he could find someone who would! Dog savvy cats should be just fine, but we can’t guarantee that Derk wouldn’t chase a skittish cat (to play, not to hurt).
Derk loves all people and has never met a stranger. He is still in that goofy, awkward puppy stage, so caution should be used around Teacup people as he might knock them over out of sheer exuberance. Derk would definitely benefit from some structure, rules, and obedience training. This boy will become an amazing companion for someone willing to show him how to channel his energy and focus in productive ways.
Derk is mostly housebroken, but he may need a refresher course when moving into a new home. He is learning not to pull on leash, and is much better with the use of a harness. He does ok in a crate as long as his energy needs have been met. Derk is a smart boy and eager to please. He is affectionate and just wants to pal around with his peeps! For those who love the Lab personality and can handle their exercise needs, Derk is the perfect fit! He is currently still located in TN, but can travel to any state we adopt to.
